Google on Thursday introduced a mobile version of its predictive search tool, Google Instant, for the iPhone and Android.
"With Google Instant on mobile, we're pushing the limits of mobile browsers and wireless networks," Google software engineer Steve Kanefsky said in a blog post. "You will probably notice a big improvement in speed when you search thanks to a new AJAX and HTML5 implementation for mobile that dynamically updates the page with new results and eliminates the need to load a new page for each query."
Google Instant first debuted in September, and executives later said it would be extended to mobile. The feature automatically suggests results as a user types a query into Google Search.
"If you type [anse] for example, you should see [ansel adams] along with other predictions," Kanefsky added. "Results for the first prediction appear automatically, and tapping on the other predictions will display those results."
To activate Google Instant on your mobile device, tap the "turn on" link on Google's site on your mobile phone. You can disable it, too, by clicking the "turn off" button.
Kanefsky said the service works best on 3G and Wi-Fi networks. Google Instant is available for Android 2.2 devices and iPhones and iPods that run on iOS 4. Although it's only available in the U.S. and in English right now, Google said it plans add more countries and languages "in the coming months."
